Gathering of Geeks

June 13, 2006

Our schedule Gathering of Geeks is schedule for June 20. Alice Barr has graciously agreed to let us work in the Flex Room of Yarmouth High School. You get there by following these wonderful directions -

http://www.yarmouth.k12.me.us/YHS/directions.htm

The day will begin at 9:00 and end formally at 3:30.

Lunch will be on your own. There are many places in the local area where one can dine.

The focus of the day will be blogging and wikis. There will be structured instruction if desired, but mostly people will gather in the right group with the right purpose because today is the right day for that work. In short, the universe will provide.

Please bring your laptop and mostly importantly something cool you’d like to share.

Please register at edublogs.org before attending.

Please RSVP with Alice (asbarr@adelphia.net) and CC me on that email. (mnolette@mainecenter.org)

Please extend this invitation to other geeks. We are an equal opportunity lover of geeks.

I won’t be attendance because I have to make some money, but I’m looking forward to hearing how things went.

Dear SEEDling…

Recently, I sent a number of people in my local hiking group a link to our web site and some pictures. People really appreciate my hard work, but something has gone terribly wrong.

In return for my efforts, one of the hikers has placed me her “I must forward this person every joke I receive” list. Some of these “jokes” include picture after picture, which really slows down how quickly the rest of my junk mail is downloaded.

What’s your advice for handling this situation? Is there an email etiquette guide you can recommend?

Thanks,

I just saw this and thought it would be interesting to try out. I think I want to clean up some stuff on my machines first. Please comment on this post if you try it out and let us know what you think.

Google Browser Sync for Firefox is an extension that continuously synchronizes your browser settings – including bookmarks, history, persistent cookies, and saved passwords – across your computers. It also allows you to restore open tabs and windows across different machines and browser sessions.

Please note: Google Browser Sync must update your browser settings whenever you start Firefox. This will increase the start-up time of Firefox (the time between clicking on the Firefox icon and loading your start page) – please bear with us as we work to decrease this delay.

Another reminder

Last week I was working on a laptop trying to “unsync” it from our network. At the Center, when a laptop comes into the office the server gets all excited to see it’s old friend and syncs the laptop with a copy on the server.

It’s awesome! Someone has a machine go to out for repair after say dropping it in a parking lot. :( You grab the spare and login in at the office presto chango your stuff is back. Very handy.

Unsyncing a machine is a bear, which gets to the point of this post. My uber geek friends (Daryl from Apple and Sean Tennant) hadn’t attempted this task, so I was a bit out of my depth.

As I worked my way through the problem I found myself in NetInfo manager deleting line after line of instructions. I was almost home and misclicked. Said yes, to the “Are you sure?” and deleted the user account. The machine ran for awhile, but it was a chicken with it’s head cut off. Running slower and more unpredictably by the CPU cycle.

Thankfully, I had backed up the data, backed it up again, and hide some stuff in a .Mac account. When back up one failed. I was still able to completely reconstruct the machine without having to resync it and have the initial problem all over again.

The lesson and the ultimate point of this post. Please back up your data today. Not today, more NOW!

Happy computing.

About time?

June 1, 2006

I bought my new iPod in Febuary in a fit of spending and I’m very happy with my purchase.

However, I was stunned to discover, post “Buy with 1-click”, that there wasn’t a audio recorder available. I did some digging and the Internet told me that a product called Micromemo would be available in the spring.

This morning I checked on the MicroMemo again which was schedule to ship this spring. However, that’s been delayed again. Sigh!

Knowing that the universe provides I went about my day and while taking my blog tour I discovered Belkin’sTuneTalkStereo will be available later this month.

I feel another fit of spending coming on.
